Red Riding Hood 2, Action, first try...

Just a try to get more dynamics into the shots... It definitly show me how much I still have to learn concerning rendering, dynamic pose, character design and animal anatomy. Each time you try to make something different it means: a lot of effort to learn what you never drew. I wish I had the Kevin Chen classes at C.D.A. who seems to cover a lot of dynamic poses and character design. Kevin is a great artist and very sympathic to. If you can; take his classes !

KAME CRUISER - v001

After hours of studying Scott Robertson s book and going into perspective deeply, here is the result. I did the perspective drawing 3 times as I wasn t happy with the final design. Doing Design during the perspective construction wasn t my cup of thee. I m to spontaneous. So I started to change the production process: I started with marker loosely to establish the final design and angle of view, then constructed the persp. After that line drawing was a pleasure. The fastest was to paint it digitaly because all the structure was established. The only photobased object are the wheel that I paint over.
"Kame" means Turtle in English so this cruiser is a peaceful expedition like car. I ve done this to get more into strong structure bases drawing and get the possibility to transmit to any 3d modeler the volumes. I wont hide that I prefer drawing women then vehicle but who hired for drawing women ? ;-)

w07 - fredpalacio WIP character Design

Tonight was claying around to get better structure. I really need to think more in term of planes..
This is a character Design development for David Colman: the Master Mentor !
We basicaly rethink a novel and get some big surprise during the process. Everybody can work digital or traditional, it doesn t matter. Most of time you should do live drawing to became aware of form and expression. Tell you more soon... But its definitly a great class and a good teacher full of energy !

Blade Runner - Prequel

I m looking for some genius script ideas for a Blade Runner Prequel. I will do some Vis-dev that I ll post in the blog and I m looking for inspiring lines...!
"The question is, 'What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to have humanity?"

Replicant Roy Batty: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in the rain. Time to die"

Iain Mc Caig - The Art Of Storytelling - A arte de contar historias

What a refreshing 40 min interview I came accross ! Iain Mc Caig a concept designer share his thinking process and experiences.

About Flipping images and ideas..."you dumped most of what you see, what you paid attention to is what is different" that because you have to quickly evaluate the information, will it treat you or can you use it at your advantage.

About Ego: "A film by a lot of people" VS "A film by Blank Blank Blank"
About Directors ego (some of them): "The driver isn t the better job than beeing the engine...their job is to pick and choose, and they decide witch way the car is going, but without the car they couldn t get there..."

"Its all about serving the story"
"E tudo para servir a estoria (a narrativa)"

"Art suports life, not the other way arround."
"A Arte suporte a vida, não o contrario"

"The books are only there if you live them, they are not there if you remember them."
"Os livros sao so aqui para viver eles, nao para ser lembrado"

Speaking about Marketing guy, driven by high investment return
- Investor: " This unpredictable thing called story, we don t need that anymore, all we need to do is making you feel things(...) that s enought. (...)
- Iain: "What a shame"
Traditional vs digital technology: "The new technology it the traditional technology of the future".. about digital caracteristic: "you don t have to commit, (...) you can change your mind forever (...), but still have to print it"

C.D.A. Animal Anatomy - Page Museum

Happy Halloween !
Abs a vcs !

LAAFA - Nathan Fowkes

I started a classes with Nathan Fowkes, a living Master ! His classes are exceptional ! As an (ex)-autodidact I really appreciate having classes, you learn fast and the main difference: you get critique from others. Normally I critic myself to progress but you don t get always at the point.

So back to Nathan's classes: the way to construct the face is totally disturbing but is the foundation of solid drawing knowledge. It is all about understanding the relationship of all elements that keep the facial tissues together and stopping just looking at the surface. Its about keeping the foundation of the structure as clear as you can and think in planes. Each step is the condition "sine qua non" to the next one.

Line needs to be clear, so stop doodle-ling approximately ( I know almost everybody do that). Put a line, don t put the ones you are searching for, choose the right one and fix it on the paper. Its like a Disney story, looking for a charming princess, choose one and it has to be the right one, seek for the particularity and uniqueness. :-)
So lots of good artist work is the consequence of good artistic decision. Question about what value range will you paint, how will you choose to paint the subject (light and shadow organization, soft vs light round vs square, and and and...). Adding to that the observation skills and understanding of form. For example why is a shadow sharp or soft. So many things that most of demos shows but don t explain.
Finally there is the famous 3 rules....practice, practice and practice !
A good thing at Nathan classes: he wont allow you not to do homework, so pressure is high but that is exactly why you should take the class, trying to improve is not the point...just improve. Even with 7 classes a week and lot of homework I m here sitting and putting the charcoal pigments on the paper.

Something remarkable looking him drawing is to see how comited he is to his drawing. Organizing, squinting, corecting and most interesting putting just few strokes on the paper but just the rights ones, like a chess player will put his pieces before the final sentence. What I will do in 50 strokes he probably will choose just 5 of them and that s the magic. And when the structure and value are placed the magic suddenly appears. Behind all the technical aspect that we are looking for, the master has just do what distinguish his drawing from all the others. The spectator is manipulated by the picture...the eyes can t stop looking at something he can not catch...The focal point, the sharpness of the edge are leading our eyes to one point and the other. Subtle variation are not happy accident but decision taken to drive us where the artist wanted. A simple portrait. Echec et mat.

Still so much to learn. Even knowing what to do, nothing is done ! It wont be easy. I struggle a with Charcoal, but its a relief suffering if you compare to the menu of 3D autodesk s maya ! (hehehe)
I hope to see some progress on this blog...if not shut it down !

By the way, just to be more humble check Nathan's blog he is also a master of Color (workshop coming soon).
